Differences Between 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee & 2019 Ford Edge

Serving Serving Cincinnati, OH, Columbus, OH, and Springfield, OH

Midsize SUVs are perfect for those who need a vehicle that’s neither too big nor too small while providing enough interior space, sturdiness, and standard features. The Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Ford Edge are two of such vehicles. For the 2019 model year, Chrysler does not do much with the Grand Cherokee, which is currently in its fourth production cycle; blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are now standard. By contrast, the Ford Edge, which is now halfway through its second production cycle, gets a facelift, as well as a new trim: the ST, which now serves as the vehicle’s top-level model. Despite the major refresh, the Edge is edged out (no pun intended) by its Jeep counterpart due to three key attributes:

Performance

Both the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the 2019 Ford Edge provide the option of getting a drivetrain that sends engine power to all four wheels so that traction ability is maximized. However, such a drivetrain choice on the Edge is classified as all-wheel drive while that of the Grand Cherokee is classified as four-wheel drive. The all-wheel drivetrain is suitable for avoiding slippage on driving surfaces made slippery by rain, snow, or ice. By comparison, however, the four-wheel drivetrain on the Jeep Grand Cherokee is implemented to optimize tire grip on any type of surface, not just those that are slippery. That’s because such a system involves either a two-speed transfer case or a rear limited-slip differential for routing all available torque to the axle with the most traction when tire slippage is detected. Couple that with a traction management system, and the Grand Cherokee can also successfully conquer sand, mud, and rocky terrain with nary a problem. Plus, with the Jeep, you can go with the Trailhawk, which in addition to having a standard four-wheel drivetrain, has a lifted suspension to keep the undercarriage farther away from potentially damaging debris when off-roading.

PowerTrain

On the 2019 Ford Edge, you get two twin-turbocharged EcoBoost engine choices: a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder with 245 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque; and a 2.7-liter V6 with 335 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. On the 2019 Jeep Cherokee, you get four. One of them, the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, serves as the base-level workhorse and surpasses its Edge counterpart by 50 horsepower. And the other three engines—a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 with 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque, a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine with 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, and a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI® V8 with 707 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque—outgun both Edge engines.

Braking and Trailer Control

Present on the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee—and absent on the 2019 Ford Edge—are rain brake support, ready-alert braking, and trailer sway control. Rain brake support involves a small amount of pressure applied to the brake calipers to keep the rotors dry and maintain peak performance during wet-road conditions. With ready-alert braking, the small amount of pressure is applied to activate full braking power more quickly to shorten stopping distances. And trailer sway control uses the vehicle’s electronic stability control sensors to adjust the throttle and apply brake pressure so that both vehicle and trailer (when attached) are kept under control when driving.
